SACCHINI (Antonio). Œdipe à Colone, opera in three acts firs - Lot 24
SACCHINI (Antonio). Œdipe à Colone, opera in three acts first performed before their Majesties at Versailles on January 4, 1786, and by the Académie royale de musique on February 1, 1787. Paris, Imbault, s. d. In-4, (1) f.-235 pp. of music, half-brown basane with small corners, spine ribbed, mute (contemporary binding). Binding worn, old angular wetness, otherwise a good copy. A protégé of Marie-Antoinette, Antonio SACCHINI (Florence, 1730 - Paris, 1786) composed Oedipe à Colone to a libretto by Nicolas-François Guillard. At its premiere in Versailles, the work met with a lukewarm reception. The difficulties encountered by the Queen forced her to cancel the revival. A terrible blow for Sacchini, who died shortly afterwards. The opera was finally successfully revived in Paris in 1787, becoming one of the greatest operatic triumphs of the period.
