187 BIS. CLÉRY (Jean-Baptiste). A Journal of Events at the T - Lot 187
187 BIS. CLÉRY (Jean-Baptiste). A Journal of Events at the Temple Tower During the Imprisonment of Louis XVI, King of France. By M. Cléry, valet to the King. London, printed by Baylis, sold by the author and by booksellers in London and the principal cities of Europe, 1798. In-8, [1] title leaf, [8] leaves (list of subscribers in English), 239-[1] pp. Calfskin with grain, smooth spine, green title label (contemporary binding). Edition published in the year of the original, illustrated with 3 engraved plates: a view of the Tower of Temple by Audinet, a plan of the second and third floors of the tower, and a facsimile. Cléry served for five months as a valet to the king and his family during their captivity in the Tower of the Temple. He then likely fled to London, having connections with monarchists exiled in England, who likely financed the publication of this work. (Tourneux, 3551.)
